Let's say someone is lacking self-esteem and confidence. He or she could easily change that by listening repeatedly to something like: "I am a worthy human being, I love myself, and I love others as well." and so on. In this case, perhaps someone else's voice saying that to this person might work better in the beginning, because this person doesn't believe in him/herself.
Verbal suggestions like the one given above can be listened at a volume sufficiently low that we don't perceive them (and thus we cannot fight them with our reasoning mind), but our subconscious will register them, and eventually they will permeate into our rational mind, reshaping our personality, and thus our lives.
